When you get asked about your career goals, the hiring manager is trying to make sure that your goals line up with what you would be doing in their company. They want to make sure that you won’t leave for a new job right away. This question also helps them determine if you are a good fit for the company. If your goals match up with what you would be doing or could be doing with them, it will indicated that you could succeed at this company.

Now that you know the interviewer wants to know if your goals line up with those of the company, there are a few things you want to make sure to include in your answer.

 

  • Connect your answer to the job you’re applying for.
  • Talk about how you want to learn new things that will make you better in the position you’re applying for.
  • Try to bring up skills and traits that you have that would help you do the job.
  • Make sure that the goals you talk about could happen in the company you are interviewing with.Answer the question honestly and in a way that assures the interviewer that you are genuinely interested in working for and staying with their company.

  • Do not mention goals about going back to school or starting a family. This may make it seem like you won’t be with this company for the long haul.
  • Do not mention a career path that couldn’t happen in the company you are interviewing with.
  • Be careful not to start bragging about what you think you will accomplish.
